Starter Beginner Intermediate 私は週末、ノルウェーのオスロに行きました。木曜日から日曜日まで旅行しました。カルダモンのパンがおいしかったです。 I went to Oslo in Norway over the weekend. I travelled from Thursday to Sunday. The cardamom bun was delicious. オスロで博物館に行きました。古い家や建物を見ました。ノルウェーの伝統的な文化や生活を見ることができて、とてもおもしろかったです。 In Oslo, I visited a museum. I saw old houses and buildings. It was very interesting to see Norway's traditional culture and lifestyle. 博物館でいろいろな文化体験ができます。私はノルウェーの昔話を聞きました。 You can try various cultural experiences at the museum. I listened to Norwegian folktales. 博物館の人はノルウェー語で昔話を聞かせてくれました。ノルウェー語はわかりませんが、話を聞きながら、これ、知ってるかもしれない・・・と思いました。 The museum staff told the tales in Norwegian. Though I don't understand Norwegian, as I listened, I thought, “I might know this one...”. 3匹の山羊の話で、日本でもよく知られています。ノルウェーの昔話だったんですね。後で聞いたら、当たっていました。特別な思い出になりました。 It was the story of the three goats, which is also well known in Japan. It turned out to be a Norwegian folktale—I didn’t know that! I asked about it later, and I was right. It became a special memory. それから、オスロの大きい図書館に行きました。絵本のコーナーで「3匹の山羊のがらがらどん」を見つけました。 Then, I went to the big library in Oslo. In the picture book corner, I found ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 先週の週末、サイクリングをしました。湖で鳥を見ました。鳥の名前は「う」です。 Last weekend, I went cycling. I saw birds at the lake. The name of the bird is ‘u’. 湖にはいろいろな鳥がいました。鴨や、鷺や、白鳥などがいます。海が近いから、鴎もたくさんいました。でも、一番多かったのは、黒い、ペリカンみたいな鳥でした。 There were various birds at the lake. There were ducks, herons, swans, and so on. Since the sea is nearby, there were also many seagulls. But what I saw the most were black birds that looked like pelicans. 近くに鳥の名前とイラストが書いてありました。英語でcormorant。携帯で日本語を調べました。日本語の名前は「鵜」でした。私は初めて鵜を見ました。 There was a notice nearby with the birds' names and illustrations. In English, they're called cormorants. I looked up the Japanese word on my phone. The Japanese name is ‘u.’ It was my first time seeing u. 日本語には一文字の言葉があります。例えば・・・ Japanese has one-character words. For example... 胃：ストレスがある時やご飯を食べ過ぎた時に痛くなります。 鵜：鳥の名前です。海にいるのは海鵜、川にいるのは川鵜だそうです。 絵：美術館で見たり、うちに飾ったりするものです。 蚊：夏に出る黒くて小さい虫です。刺されると、かゆくなります。 歯：口の中にあります。食事の後や、夜、寝る前にみがきます。 i: It hurts when you're stressed or eat too much. u: The name of a bird. Those in the sea are called sea cormorants, and those in rivers are called river cormorants. e: Something you see in an art museum or display at home. ka: A small black insect that appears in summer. It makes you itch when you get bitten. ha: Something in your mouth. You brush them after meals and at night before bed. みなさんは他にも何か、一文字の言葉を知っていますか。 Do you know any other one-character words?

Starter Beginner Intermediate 私は今、一人で旅行しています。ロンドンから飛行機に乗りました。ここはどこか、わかりますか？ Right now, I'm travelling on my own. I got on a plane from London. Do you know where I am? 今朝、美術館に行きました。美術館の前は海です。いい絵がたくさんあって、おもしろかったです。 This morning I went to the art gallery. It's located in front of the sea. There were many good paintings, so it was interesting. 一番有名な絵がある部屋は少し混んでいました。 The room with the most famous painting was a bit crowded. 11時から3時まで美術館にいたので、昼ご飯を食べませんでした。でも、ホテルで朝ご飯をしっかり食べたし、この国は物価が高いから、ちょうどいい節約になりました。 I was at the museum from 11 until 3, so I didn't have lunch. But I had a big breakfast at the hotel, and since this country is expensive, it worked out as a good saving. 晩ご飯はすてきなレストランを予約して、おいしいミートボールを食べました。 For dinner, I booked a lovely restaurant and had delicious meatballs.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 私の友達は小さい畑を持っています。水曜日に友達の畑に行きました。この畑は友達のうちの庭ではありません。英語でアロットメントといいます。みんなの畑です。 My friend has a small allotment. On Wednesday, I went to my friend's allotment. This allotment isn't in her garden. In English, it's called an allotment. It's a shared garden. ロンドンは大きくて、にぎやかな町ですが、私の家のまわりはみどりが多いです。広い公園や、森があります。そして、アロットメントがあちこちにあります。私は畑を持っていませんが、畑を見るのは大好きです。ときどき友達のアロットメントに遊びに行けてうれしいです。 London is a large, bustling city, but there's a lot of greenery around my house. There are big parks and woods. And allotments are here and there. I don't have my own allotment, but I love looking at them. I'm lucky to be able to visit my friend's allotment sometimes. 友達のアロットメントでいろいろな野菜や果物を見ました。夏の野菜と言えばトマトですが、トマトの赤い色は元気が出ます。 At my friend's allotment, I saw many different vegetables and fruits. When it comes to summer vegetables, tomatoes are the first thing that comes to mind, and their red colour is so uplifting. 水風船みたいな大きいトマトがありました。小さくて、かわいいトマトもありました。サンタクロースのベルみたいでした。 There were big tomatoes, like water balloons. There were also small, cute ones. They looked like Santa Claus's bells.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 先週の金曜日にロンドンの博物館に行きました。電車で東ロンドンに行きました。 I went to a museum in London last Friday. I went to East London by train. この博物館は新しいです。今年の5月にできました。博物館に家具や楽器や洋服などがありました。有名な建築家がデザインした部屋や、たくさんの人が住むための団地を見ることができました。 This museum is new. It was built in May this year. The museum had furniture, musical instruments, clothes, and other items. I was able to see rooms designed by famous architects and estates where many people live. 生活の歴史はおもしろいです。無料だから、また行きたいです。 The history of daily life is interesting. It's free, so I want to go again. この博物館はコレクションの展示方法もおもしろかったです。まるでIKEAの倉庫の中を歩いているみたいなのですが、1つ1つのセクションは不思議なコンセプトで集められた展示品が並んでいました。 The way the museum displayed its collection was also interesting. It felt like walking through an IKEA warehouse, but each section had exhibits gathered under a mysterious concept. 普通は同じ時代の物や、同じ種類の物が集まっていると思うんですが、この博物館は違います。 Usually, you'd expect items from the same era or of the same type to be grouped together, but this museum is different. しかも、展示品の説明がほとんど書かれていない（アプリで読めます）ので、がらくたの寄せ集めみたいにも見えるし、誰かの宝物みたいにも見えます。 Plus, there were hardly any explanations for the exhibits (you can read them on the app), so it looked like a random collection of junk or someone's precious treasures.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 先週は私の夏休みでした。一週間、仕事を休みました。家族とクロアチアの島に行きました。 Last week was my summer holiday. I took a week off work. I went to a Croatian island with my family. AirBnBで家を借りました。毎日、のんびり過ごしました。海で泳ぎました。それから本を読みました。 We rented a house on Airbnb. I spent each day just relaxing. I swam in the sea. Then I read books. 夜はだいたい、うちでご飯を作ってバルコニーで食べました。魚のBBQが一番おいしかったです。町にマーケットがありました。新鮮な魚を買うことができて、よかったです。 In the evening we usually cooked dinner at home and ate it on the balcony. The fish BBQ was the best. There was a market in town. It was good to be able to buy fresh fish. 最後の日にドブロブニクに寄って昼ご飯を食べ、街の中を少し歩きました。ドブロブニクは2回目でしたが、本当にきれいで、おもしろい町なので、何回行っても楽しめます。 On the last day, we stopped in Dubrovnik for lunch and walked around the city a bit. This was my second time in Dubrovnik, but it's a really beautiful and interesting town, so it's fun no matter how many times you go. 同じ町に旅行に行くと、ただいま！という感じがして、うれしいです。 Travelling back to the same place feels like a happy return, and I like that feeling.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 今日、買い物に行きました。スーパーや、日用品の店や、オーガニックショップなどに行きました。 Right now, I went shopping today. I went to a supermarket, an household goods shop and an organic shop, and so on. 最初にスーパーに行きました。魚と肉と野菜を買いました。次に日用品の店に行きました。店にはいろいろな物があります。キッチン用品とか、ガーデニング用品とか、掃除の道具など、何でもあります。私はジョウロを買いました。 First I went to the supermarket. I bought fish, meat and vegetables. Next I went to a household goods shop. There are various things in the shop. There are kitchen utensils, gardening tools, cleaning tools, they have everything. I bought a watering pot. それから、オーガニックショップに行って、シャンプーを買いました。最後にチョコレートの店に行きました。プレゼントを買いました。カードも買いました。 Then I went to an organic shop and bought shampoo. Finally, I went to a chocolate shop. I bought gifts. I also bought a card. チョコレートのお店は私のお気に入りです。今週、息子が職場体験をしています。私の友達の会社で働かせてもらっています。お世話になったので、お礼にチョコレートを贈ろうと思っています。 The chocolate shop is my favourite. My son is doing work experience this week. My friend kindly offer him the opportunity to work at their office. Because they have been so helpful, I am thinking of giving them some chocolates as a thank-you gift.

Starter Beginner Intermediate ロンドンのカフェでフルーツサンドを食べました。すてきなお店でした。いちごのサンドイッチはおいしかったです。 I had a fruit sandwich at a café in London. It was a lovely place. The strawberry sandwich was delicious. この写真は今年の5月に撮りました。この日、私は仕事でイーストロンドンに行きました。電車とバスで行って、30分ぐらい早く着きました。 I took this picture in May. On that day I went to East London for work. I went by train and bus and arrived about half an hour early. 仕事まで少し時間があったので、コーヒーを飲もうと思って、近くのカフェに入りました。Uchi Bakeというカフェで、日本人の方がやっているようです。おいしそうなパンがいろいろありました。いちごのサンドイッチがあって、うれしかったです。 I had some time before work, so I decided to have a coffee and went into a nearby café called Uchi Bake, which seems to be run by a Japanese person. There was a range of delicious-looking pastries. I was happy to see strawberry sandwiches. フルーツサンドは日本では人気があります。最近、イギリスのM&Sというスーパーで売っています。 Fruit sandwiches are popular in Japan. Recently it is sold in supermarkets called M&S in the UK. イギリスの人にはフルーツサンドは変な感じがするかもしれませんが、苺と生クリームの組み合わせはイギリスでも定番です。特にウィンブルドンのテニスの会場で食べるのが、夏の伝統だそうです。M&Sの苺クリームサンドイッチはウィンブルドンシーズンの限定メニューとして発売されました。 Fruit sandwiches may seem strange to British people, but the combination of strawberries and whipped cream is a classic in the UK. Apparently it's a summer tradition, especially to eat it at the Wimbledon tennis stadium, and M&S's strawberry cream sandwich was sold as a limited edition for the Wimbledon season. 私も一度食べてみたいんですが、いつも売り切れです。ウィンブルドンが終わるまでに食べられるか、わかりません。 I'd love to try, but they are always sold out. I don't know if I will be able to eat it before the Wimbledon tournament ends.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 先週、キャンプに行きました。家族や友達といっしょに行きました。いい天気でした。楽しかったです。 Last week I went camping. I went with my family and friends. It was a nice weather. It was fun. 金曜日の夜8時ごろキャンプ場につきました。みんなで晩ご飯を食べました。夜、月がきれいでした。 We arrived at the campsite at around eight o'clock on Friday night. We had dinner together. The moon was beautiful at night. 土曜日は海に行きました。キャンプ場から海まで歩いて10分ぐらいです。風が強くて少し寒かったので、泳ぎませんでした。パブでビールを飲みました。5時ぐらいにキャンプ場に帰って、バーベキューをしました。それから、スイカを食べました。あまくて、おいしかったです。 On Saturday we went to the beach. It is a 10-minute to walk from the campsite to the sea. It was windy and a bit cold, so we didn't swim. We had a beer in the pub. We went back to the campsite at about five o'clock and had a barbecue. Then we ate watermelon. It was sweet and tasty. イギリスの夏は夜10時ぐらいまで明るいので、たくさん遊べて楽しかったです。友達がおもしろいゲームを持ってきてくれました。ボールを投げる遊びで、フランスのゲームだと言っていました。私ははじめてやったのですが、かんたんで、おもしろかったです。 It is light until about 10pm in summer in Britain, so we were able to play a lot and enjoyed. My friend brought an interesting game. It's a game to throw a ball, and he said it was a French game. I had never played it before, but it was easy and fun. 日曜日は朝ご飯の後でテントをたたんだり、荷物を片付けたりしました。お昼の12時ごろにキャンプ場を出て、うちに帰りました。最後にみんなで写真を撮って、アイスを食べました。 On Sunday, after breakfast, we folded the tents and packed up our stuff. We left the campsite around midday and went home. Before we left, we took one last photo together and had ice cream.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 今週は私の誕生日がありました。カードとプレゼントをもらいました。 Right this week I had my birthday. I received a card and a present. 誕生日の夜、家族でお刺身を食べました。それからケーキも食べました。おいしかったです。 On my birthday night, we had sashimi as a family. Then we also had cake. It was delicious. I プレゼントをもらいました。小さい箱でした。少し重かったです。プレゼントを開けました。箱にOLYMPUSと書いてありました。それは双眼鏡でした。うれしかったです。 got a present. It was a small box. It was a bit heavy. I opened the present. It said OLYMPUS written on the box. It was binoculars. I was happy. 私は鳥を見るのが好きで、最近、双眼鏡が欲しいと思っていました。でも、プレゼントでもらうと思っていなかったので、びっくりしました。コンパクトで軽いから、森や海岸を歩きに行く時にも便利そうです。 I like watching birds and recently I wanted to get binoculars. But I didn't expect to receive them as a present, so I was surprised. They are compact and lightweight, so they will be useful when I go walking in the woods or on the beach. あと、今年の10月に相撲を見に行くので、その時にも使えます。本当にいいプレゼントを選んでくれました。 Also, I'm going to see sumo wrestling in October so I can use it then too. They chose a really good present for me.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 今日はいい天気でした。暑かったです。夫と車で海に行きました。 Today it was a beautiful weather. It was hot. I went to the beach by car with my husband. うちを10時ぐらいに出ました。ブライトンの近くの海に行きました。12時ごろ海に着きました。お腹がすいたから、カフェに昼ごはんを買いに行きました。私はカニのサラダを食べました。大きいカニがどーんと入っていました。野菜が新鮮でおいしかったです。トマトが甘かったです。 We left home at about 10:00. We went to the sea near Brighton. We arrived at the beach around 12.00. We were hungry, so we went to a café to buy lunch. I had a crab salad. There was a big crab in it. The vegetables were fresh and tasty. The tomatoes were sweet. イギリスの海で食べるものと言えば、何と言ってもフィッシュ＆チップスで、夫も最初はフィッシュ＆チップスを買うと言っていました。でも、おすすめメニューの中にシーフードのフライの盛り合わせ、サラダ付きというのがあって、そらちにしました。エビと、イカと、小魚のフライがたくさん入っていてとてもおいしかったです。フライは揚げたてでした。 When it comes to food at sea in the UK, fish and chips are the best, and my husband said he would buy fish and chips at first. But there was a fried seafood platter with salad on the recommended menu, so he decided to go for that. It was very tasty, with lots of prawns, squid and fried white baits. They were freshly fried. 海に向かって車で走っている時にチェリーの売店があって、おいしそうでした。でも、スピードを出して走っていたので止まれませんでした。 まれませんでした。 When we were driving towards the sea, there was a cherry stall and it looked nice. But we couldn't stop because we were driving too fast.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 今週は毎日暑いです。月曜日と水曜日と金曜日にプールに行きました。 It has been hot every day this week. I went to the swimming pool on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 私は夏が好きです。暑くても、たいていは大丈夫です。 でも、バスの中はエアコンがないから、ちょっとつらいです。今週、バスの運転手さんはタンクトップの肌着で運転していました。 I like summer. Even when it's hot, most of the time I'm fine. But it's a bit too much on the bus because there is no air-conditioning. This week, the bus driver was driving in a tank top underwear. 暑いのは好きですが、太陽がギラギラしている時は日陰を歩きます。日陰は涼しいです。暑い日に公園に行ったら、大きな木の下で休みます。木の陰を木陰と言いますが。木陰は涼しくて、気持ちいいです。 I like the heat, but when the sun is glaring, I walk in the shade. It is cool in the shade. If I go to the park on a hot day, I rest under a big tree. The shade of a tree is called kokakge . It is cool and refreshing in the shade of a tree. 今週、歩いている時に道で日傘をさしている人を見ました。日傘は暑い日に使う傘です。イギリスで日傘を見たのは初めてです。日本にはいろいろハイテクな日傘があって、便利そうです。これからイギリスでも日傘が人気になるかもしれません。 This week, when I was walking, I saw people holding parasols on the street. Higasa is an umbrella used on hot days. This is the first time I have seen parasols in the UK. In Japan, there are many high-tech higasa , which seem to be very convenient. Parasols may become popular in the UK in the future.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 先週の月曜日にスーパーに行きました。パンと、牛乳と、肉と、野菜を買いました。それから、カップラーメンを2つ買いました。子どもにあげました。 Last Monday I went to the supermarket. I bought bread, milk, meat and vegetables. Then I bought two cup noodles. I gave them to my children. スーパーに日清のカップヌードルがたくさんありました。でも、私の好きなやつはありませんでした。私は普通のカップヌードルが一番好きです。 There were many Nissin Cup Noodles in the supermarket. But there were none that I liked. I like regular cup noodles the best. 火曜日の朝、友達と公園に行きました。バラの花が咲いていました。公園にいろいろな種類のバラがあります。どれもきれいでした。 On Tuesday morning, I went to the park with my friend. Roses were in bloom. There are many different kinds of roses in the park. They were all beautiful. 水曜日から金曜日までは仕事が忙しかったです。でも、金曜日の夜にレストランに行きました。中華料理のレストランで、野菜炒めと、水餃子と、焼き餃子を食べました。 I was busy with work from Wednesday to Friday. But on Friday night we went to a restaurant. I had stir-fried vegetables, boiled dumplings and fried dumplings at a Chinese restaurant. 土曜日は朝、仕事をしてから、午後はロンドンのテムズ川の近くを散歩しました。夜、ローストビーフを作りました。おいしかったです。 On Saturday, I worked in the morning and then went for a walk near the River Thames in London in the afternoon. I always wanted slightly deep plates for serving curry and pasta. もう一つ、前から買おうと思ってるものがあって、それはロースト料理のソース、グレイビーを入れる入れ物です。でもシンプルなものは意外と買うのが難しいし、なくても困らないから買わずに済ませてしまいます。この日も買えませんでした。今年のクリスマスまでにはネットでシンプルな白いやつ買おうと思います。この入れ物は英語で「グレイビーボート」と言うみたいです。かわいい名前ですね。 There is one more thing I've been thinking of buying for a while: a pot for gravy, the sauce for roast dishes. But simple things are surprisingly difficult to buy, and even if I don't have it, I'm fine without them, so I end up not buying them. I couldn't buy it that day either. I will buy a simple white one online before Christmas this year. This container seems to be called a “gravy boat” in English. It's a cute name.

Starter Beginner Intermediate 先週、ロンドンで演劇を見ました。おもしろい作品を見ました。タイトルはDealer's Choice。ポーカーの話です。 Last week, I watched a play in London. It was an interesting production. The title was Dealer's Choice. It is a story about poker. 私は演劇が好きです。でも、演劇のチケットは安くないです。この劇は一番安い席のチケットを取りました。15ポンドでした。映画より安いです。これは、立ち見の席です。私は立ち見席で劇を見たことがありませんでした。少し心配でした。 I like theatre. But theatre tickets are not cheap. For this play, I got the cheapest ticket. It was £15, it's cheaper than a movie ticket. This was a standing ticket. I had never watched a play from a standing room before. I was a little worried. その日、私は1人で見に行きました。劇場の人が私のチケットを見て言いました。1番前の席が1つ空いているから、そこに座りませんか？もちろん、座って見たいです。とてもラッキーでした。 That day, I went alone. The theatre staff looked at my ticket and said, “There is one empty seat in the front row. Would you like to sit there?” Of course, I wanted to sit and watch. I was very lucky. ロンドンは、いつでも、おもしろそうな演劇がたくさんあります。いつもだったら、真ん中ぐらいの値段の席を取りますが今年は日本に行ったし、秋にロンドンで見る相撲のチケットも高かったし、ちょっと節約しようと思ったんです。立ち見席の体験はまた今度になりました。 In London there are many interesting plays all the time. Usually, I buy a mid-priced ticket. However, this year, I went to Japan, and in autumn, I will watch sumo in London - that tickets were expensive. So, I wanted to save money. But my standing ticket experience will have to wait for another time.

When you want to see a special exhibition, you buy a ticket to go and see it. Right now the special exhibition is Ukiyo-e by Hiroshige Utagawa . During the Edo period, many people travelled from Edo, (now Tokyo) to Kyoto. It is said that many Ukiyo-e were published to introduce the scenery of the journey to those who travelled. Ukiyo-e showed the scenery of the Todaido, a road from Tokyo along the sea coast, and the Nakasendo, a road through the mountains. また、大英博物館の中にはいつでも無料で見られる 日本ギャラリー があって、こちらもおすすめです。5階にあるのでちょっと遠いですが、すばらしい内容です。日本ギャラリーでは 毎月2回茶道のデモンストレーションがあるそうです 。 There is also the Japanese Gallery in the British Museum, which is always free to look at, and which I also recommend - it's on the fifth floor, so it's a bit far away, but it's excellent inside.
