日本で団地の博物館に行きました。東京の赤羽にあります。

I visited a housing estate museum in Japan. It is located in Akabane, Tokyo.

団地は大きなアパートです。建物は1つじゃなくて、集合住宅です。古い団地はおもしろいです。博物館で団地の歴史を見たり、話を聞いたりしました。団地の歴史は生活の歴史です。

A housing estate is a large block of flats. It is not just a single building, but a complex of flats. Old housing estates are fascinating. At the museum, I saw the history of housing estates and listened to stories about them. The history of housing estates is the history of everyday life.

今から100年ぐらい前に東京でとても大きい地震がありました。たくさんの家が壊れて、なくなりました。住宅問題を解決するために団地ができました。団地は国のプロジェクトです。

About 100 years ago, there was a major earthquake in Tokyo. Many houses collapsed and were lost. Danchi were built to solve the housing problem. They were a state project.

団地は生活が安全で便利になるように、いろいろな工夫がしてあります。例えば、ベランダから逃げる梯子です。それから、玄関のドアが引き戸になっている家もありました。家の前の廊下で子どもが遊べるように、安全なスライド式のドアにしたそうです。ドアを中から開けた時に子どもが外にいたら危ないからです。

Public housing estates feature various considerations to make life safer and more convenient. For example, there are ladders for escaping from the balcony. Also, some homes had sliding doors at the entrance. Apparently, these were designed as safe sliding doors so that children could play in the corridor in front of the house. This is because it would be dangerous if a child were outside when the door was opened from the inside.
