私の家族は4人です。夫と子ども2人です。子どもの誕生日は3月と4月です。

There are four of us in my family: my husband and two children. Our children’s birthdays are in March and April.

今週は長男の誕生日です。21才になります。今、大学生です。大学はロンドンじゃないです。うちから3時間ぐらいかかります。友達といっしょに住んでいます。誕生日に会うことができないから、オンラインの店からお菓子とお酒を送りました。日本食のネットショップで、和菓子とおせんべいとビールにしました。ビールはキリンが安くなってたので12本買ってあげました。

そして来月は次男の誕生日です。18才になります。

This week is my eldest son’s birthday. He’s turning 21. He’s currently at university. It’s not in London; it takes about three hours to get there from our home. He lives with friends. As I can’t see him on his birthday, I sent him some sweets and drinks from an online shop. I chose Japanese sweets, rice crackers and beer from a Japanese food online shop. Kirin beer was on offer, so I bought him 12 bottles.

And next month is my younger son’s birthday. He’ll be turning 18.

イギリスでは18才からお酒を飲むことができます。次男は誕生日の夜に友達とパブに行こうと考えているみたいです。パブやクラブに入るためには18才以上だとわかるIDが必要だから運転免許を申し込んでいました。申し込みをすれば「仮免許」がもらえます。仮免許は写真付きのIDとして便利だそうです。

In the UK, you’re allowed to drink alcohol from the age of 18. It seems my younger son is planning to go to a pub with his friends on the night of his birthday. As you need ID to prove you’re over 18 to get into pubs and clubs, he’s applied for a driving licence. Once you apply, you can get a provisional licence. Apparently, a provisional licence is handy as a photo ID.

私も身分証明のために運転免許を見せるときがありますが、仮免許でも使えるそうです。次男は今、受験生で勉強が忙しいです。でも、パブに行く準備とか、試験の後の旅行など、遊ぶ計画も忙しそうです。18才の誕生日を楽しんで欲しいです。

I sometimes show my driving licence as proof of identity, and it seems a provisional licence works just as well. My second son is currently a university applicant, so he’s busy with his studies. However, he also seems busy making plans to have fun, such as getting ready to go to the pub and planning a trip after his exams. I hope he enjoys his 18th birthday.
